Rockingham County’s new Indoor Recreation Center will have a soft opening ceremony Wednesday, January 29.
The 80,000 square-foot facility is located at Rockingham Park at the Crossroads and boasts a collegiate-level indoor track with space for field events, an array of athletic courts, a specialized sensory room, and multiple classrooms for other indoor programs and activities. The new recreation center will allow the County’s Parks and Recreation Department the capability to offer their traditional community recreational programs in one central location, as well as new opportunities for wellness programs for visitors of all ages.
Construction began in late November 2023 and lasted 14 months. The project was made possible by many local contractors and associated construction companies based in Rockingham County and the City of Harrisonburg, including Lantz Construction, LDDBlueline, Monteverde Engineering, Viola Engineering, Algers Excavation, Riddleberger Brothers, Trumbo Electric,
A & D Applicators, and others.
The first major event to be hosted at the new facility will be the Valley District High School Indoor Track and Field District Championship on February 8
