The Free Smoke Alarm Program is supported by local civic groups and fire associations within the County and has been in place for more than 20 years. In an effort to make sure that our citizens are protected in the event of a fire, we will provide you with a free smoke detector if you are a resident of Rockingham County.

If you are in need of an alarm, complete the online Application for Free Smoke Alarm . Once we receive your application, you will receive a phone call from your local fire department.They will come to your home to install the detector at a time that is convenient to you.

Safety Facts:

  1. Three out of five fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms.
  2. Most fatal home fires occur at night while the victims are sleeping.
  3. Smoke and hot invisible gases usually reach the victim long before the fire.
  4. Fires double in size every 30 seconds – advance warning from a smoke alarm can save lives, property and personal belongings.

Installation and maintenance:

  1. Smoke alarms at a minimum should be located on every level of your home and in the area of bedrooms or other sleeping areas.
  2. Smoke alarms should not be placed in kitchens or bathrooms.
  3. Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years.
  4. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly to ensure that they are operating.
  5. Smoke alarm batteries should be replaced every time you adjust your clocks (every six months).
  6. Smoke alarms should be dusted regularly – occasionally vacuum the outside.

  1. Working smoke alarms save lives
  2. Have a home fire escape plan
  3. Always have two ways out of every room
  4. Practice escaping even in the dark
  5. Crawl low under smoke
  6. Infants and elders may need additional assistance
  7. Never use an elevator in the event of an emergency
  8. Get out fast!
  9. Know where to go – have a safe family meeting place
  10. Never ever go back inside once you have escaped your home
