Rockingham County’s Internet Geographic Information System (GIS) Up and Running at http://rockingham.gisbrowser.com
GIS staff, along with TerraLogic, Inc. (based in Staunton, VA), have recently completed and released the initial development phase of an internet based GIS. The system allows users to access interactive maps and government records utilizing a common Internet browser. While the system provides a wealth of real estate and assessment information, it also includes aerial photography, tax maps, flood zones, public lands, agricultural & forestall districts, roads, streams, and terrain/elevation shading.
The site contains two map-viewing options. The first is the Static Map Catalog. Here, a user can view pre-made printable maps of interest. Included are maps of election and school districts, Countywide zoning and land use, and a County overview map.
The second option is Interactive Mapping. Here a user can view and query the County’s GIS data. From this option, a tax map number or landowner name can be entered and searched for. Once a search is executed, associated real estate information along with a map of the property is displayed. The real estate information includes landowner name and mailing address, zoning, land use, and acreage, property values, and main building information. The map will display an aerial photograph background, property lines, building outlines, streams and floodplains, and roads with names and route numbers.
GIS staff is already working on providing additional information to be displayed on the site. This will include elementary, middle and high schools, election districts, zip code boundaries, railroads, watershed boundaries, census tracts, and fire departments and rescue squads.
