Philosophy and Goals of the Program
The Little School program is designed to promote the social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of all children in a safe and nurturing environment. This learning environment recognizes that all children develop at their own special rate and emphasis is placed on this individual growth and each child’s special needs.
Through active participation and direct involvement with people, places and materials, we feel that children learn best. Creative and meaningful play is encouraged to foster positive social interaction among peers. Creativity and self-expression are encouraged in each child, helping each develop a positive self-concept. Limitations and rules will be set to help children grow in self-discipline to better prepare them for school.
No child shall be denied admission to this program based on race, creed, sex, color or national origin.
Little School meets September through May. Little School meets from 9:30-12:00 for children ages 3, 4 and 5 years old.
The Recreation Department sells discounted tickets beginning in April through October.
Learn to Ski / Snowboard
The program is for age’s 7 years old and up and runs for 6 weeks, beginning in January, at Massanutten Ski Resort.
Several ski/snowboard packages are available and go on sale at the end of November. Beginners to advanced ski / snowboarders can benefit from this program.
Christmas Card Contest
The annual Christmas card contest is for children in grades 2nd through 5th grades. A letter is sent to elementary school teachers every November. Each child designs their own Christmas card. The Recreation Department looks at all the entries and chooses one to be used as the department’s annual Christmas card. The winner and runner-ups receive cash prizes for their efforts. The winner also is given a box of cards to give to friends and family.
Holiday Parade
Every December the Rockingham County and Harrisonburg City Recreation Departments hold the annual Holiday Parade. It is held on the first Friday night in December. Every year the parade has a new theme. A fee is charged only for those entries that advertise a business. For more information contact JoAnn Clark at 564-3160 or Cindy Ring at 433-9168.
